The Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar is for carpets, jewellery, ceramics and leather; the Spice Bazaar for spices, Turkish delight and nuts. Both are on the historic peninsula, within walking distance of each other. In the bazaars the marked price is usually a starting point; polite haggling is expected.
Streets and malls
Nisantasi on the European side and Bagdat Street on the Asian side are the centres of brand shopping. In malls prices are fixed, there is no haggling, and being indoors keeps you clear of the weather. Families with children usually pick these in summer heat or on a rainy day.
Carrying it home
By the end of a shopping day there are usually more bags than expected. This is where having the car at your disposal helps: leave the bags in it and carry on. For large purchases such as carpets, sellers arrange shipping; check your own country's import rules in advance.
