Trabzon Tour

You set off early. The first major stop is Sümela Monastery: the structure carved into the rock stands above the valley, and the view of it can be caught from the road itself. There is a climb up to the monastery; that part does not suit every age.

The lunch break is usually at Hamsiköy. The village is known for its rice pudding and sits on the route, so the stop falls naturally there.

The afternoon brings Uzungöl. The walk around the lake is flat and easy; tea gardens line the shore. It is about a hundred kilometres from the centre and two hours each way, so the weight of the day is here.

On the way back come the Zigana pass and the highland views. If time allows, Trabzon's Hagia Sophia can be seen on the way into the city.

The day is long and much of the road is winding; anyone prone to travel sickness should come prepared.

It suits: people who want nature and mountain views, those escaping the heat (the highlands stay cool even in midsummer), and photographers. It is why Gulf guests ask about the Black Sea in particular.

It can be hard for: the long drive tires small children and older travellers. The climb to Sümela is steep and does not suit anyone who struggles to walk — seeing the monastery from below is also an option, and the view is fine from there too.

Season matters: the highland season runs from late June to September. In winter roads can close with snow and reaching Uzungöl becomes difficult. Sümela also has periods of closure for maintenance; we check its status before going.
