Crossing the Bosphorus from Sabiha Gokcen down to Besiktas covers about 45 km. The road has two characters: motorway up to the bridge, then the coastal road. The run takes between 45 minutes and an hour and 20, and most of that variation comes from the second half — shore traffic thickens in the evening.
Besiktas and Ortakoy run along the shore, and the metro does not come down to the waterfront; getting around locally needs a short car or bus ride. In return there are ferry piers all along the coast — from Besiktas you can cross to Uskudar and Kadikoy by boat.
A view changes hotel prices in Istanbul more than anything else, and a view room is not available in every part of a hotel — ask for it specifically when booking. The area is close to the centre but not within walking distance of the historic sights; every trip to Sultanahmet is a journey of its own.
