Sabiha Gokcen is on the Asian side and Sultanahmet on the European one, so this route must cross the Bosphorus. Although most of the roughly 50 km is motorway, what sets the time is when you reach the bridge. The Kadikoy transfer, staying on the same side, ends in 40 minutes; this one runs between one and one and a half hours.
The streets of the historic peninsula are cobbled and steep; some are one-way and some hotels sit in lanes cars cannot enter. The driver brings you to the closest reachable point and carries the bags from there. For families arriving with luggage or a stroller, this is worth knowing when choosing the hotel.
Sultanahmet sits on the T1 tram line with the Eminonu ferry pier within walking distance; Taksim is about 25 minutes away by tram and funicular. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi are all walkable. After eight in the evening the streets quieten and restaurant choice narrows — guests who want late-night life are better placed around Taksim.
