A small peninsula with distinct characters

The Bodrum peninsula takes forty minutes end to end, yet every bay has its own character. In the north, Yalıkavak and Türkbükü are calm and expensive; to the west, Turgutreis suits families with its sunsets and wider sand; near the centre, Gümbet and Bitez are lively and better value. The centre itself, with the castle, bazaar and harbour, is alive at every hour. Because the distances are short you can see the others during the day wherever you stay — the clearest difference from Antalya.

How the sea and the boats work

In Bodrum the boat is at the centre of the holiday. Day trips stop to swim in three or four bays and serve lunch on board; on a private charter the timing and route are yours. Aegean water is a touch cooler than the Mediterranean; the sea warms in June, peaks in August and stays swimmable into early October. Most bays are pebble or platform rather than sand — water shoes help, especially with children.

How many days, and with what

For Bodrum alone, three or four days is enough: one for the centre and castle, one for a boat trip, one free in the bays. Staying longer, Didim, Milas or Ephesus can be added as day trips. Combining with Istanbul is common too: four days in Istanbul, then four in Bodrum on a short domestic flight. City followed by sea keeps the trip from becoming monotonous — the same logic as the Black Sea route, with blue instead of green.
