How to get from Istanbul Airport into the city

The metro (M11) links the airport to the city network and is cheap, but reaching the centre needs a change. Havaş buses stop at fixed points, not at your hotel door. Taxis exist, but as passengers and suitcases add up you may need two cars. For a family of four with four suitcases and a pushchair, a private vehicle is in practice the only workable option.

Delays are the most common problem on this leg, and with a pre-booked transfer the fix is simple: give your flight number and the driver arrives for the actual landing time. If your bags are slow or passport control is long, the one thing to confirm before booking is that waiting time carries no extra charge.

The time between the plane landing and walking out of the door is missing from most plans. Istanbul Airport is very large: the walk from the aircraft to passport control alone can take ten to fifteen minutes.

Passport control reaches twenty minutes at busy hours, and bags another fifteen to twenty on the belt. In total you are at the exit about forty-five minutes after landing; at a busy hour it can pass an hour.

The exits are far apart and which one you use depends on your baggage belt. This is the one airport where the meeting point with the driver must be settled in advance; "we'll meet at the exit" is not a sufficient description here.

We track the flight by its number, so the driver knows which door you will come out of and waits there with a name board. If the plane is late there is no waiting charge.

Knowing these times helps especially on connecting flights and night arrivals: assuming the hotel arrival time equals the landing time is the commonest mistake that wrecks the first day's plan.

Istanbul Airport sits in the north-west of the city, and the distance varies noticeably by district.

Taksim and Şişli are about 40 km; forty-five minutes clear, an hour and a half in the late afternoon. Sultanahmet is 45 km and a similar time, though the narrow streets entering the historic peninsula can stretch it. Beşiktaş and Ortaköy are 42 km.

The Asian side is further: 55 km to Kadıköy and between one and two hours with the bridge crossing. If you are staying on the Asian side, landing at Sabiha Gökçen halves that drive.

What sets the time is not the distance but the hour. Entry into the city is heaviest between seven and ten in the morning and five and eight in the evening; the same road takes half an hour at midnight.

With the exact hotel address at booking we give the time as fact rather than estimate — even within one district name two hotels can be twenty minutes apart. Saying "Sultanahmet" is not enough; the street name makes a difference.
