Distances and travel times between Turkish cities

Trabzon is about 1,000 km from Istanbul, Bodrum 800 km and Antalya 700 km; driving takes a full day. These are reached by air, and you still need a vehicle there, because the places worth seeing lie outside the city centres: Uzungol, Sumela, Ayder or the Aegean bays.

A simple measure: if one direction is over three hours, do not make that city a day trip — stay the night. Anything under three hours fits there and back in a day, but leave a traffic margin both ways. Not leaving the city on a flight day is another general ease: travelling with suitcases makes the first day feel longer than it is.

Sapanca is about 140 km, ninety minutes on the motorway and two hours in traffic. You leave from the Asian side, so it is shorter still if you are staying around Kadıköy.

Bursa is two hours by ferry (Yenikapı or Pendik to Mudanya, then half an hour from the pier to the centre), or about two and a half hours by road over the Osmangazi Bridge.

Antalya is 700 km and about nine hours by road; nobody chooses that, and the flight is an hour and ten minutes. Bodrum is 800 km, an hour by air. Trabzon is over a thousand kilometres and the road takes a full day one way; the flight is an hour and a half.

The practical meaning: Sapanca and Bursa are day trips, the rest need a plane. Şile and Ağva also belong on the day-trip list — on the Black Sea coast, about two hours from Istanbul.

On a day trip you have to count the total time on the road: Sapanca three hours there and back, Bursa five. What can be seen in a day that spends five hours travelling is limited; anyone who really wants to see Bursa stays a night.

Domestic flights in Türkiye are frequent and the distances long, so a plane is the only sensible option on most intercity journeys. But a flight being "one hour" does not mean the journey takes an hour.

The real sum: hotel to airport (45-90 minutes in Istanbul), being there two hours before departure, the flight itself, then arrival airport to hotel. A one-hour flight becomes five or six hours door to door. That is why a plane rarely makes sense for a two-night break.

The road applies only to Sapanca, Bursa, Şile and Ağva. Beyond those, driving means spending the whole day travelling.

There is a third option that is little known: the high-speed train. The Ankara and Konya line runs, and Ankara is four and a half hours from Istanbul. It is not useful on tourist routes because there is no line to Antalya, Bodrum or Trabzon.
