When to visit Türkiye: a season guide

This is the peak season for Gulf visitors. Istanbul is hot and humid; sightseeing on the historic peninsula at midday is tiring, so spread the programme across early morning and late afternoon. Sapanca, Bolu and the Black Sea plateaus are where you go for cooler air in these months.

September and October are a quiet stretch when the summer heat has passed but clear weather holds. Rain increases from November. Winter is for snow scenery and for Uludag and Kartepe; snow in Istanbul is not guaranteed every year, and the city slows when it falls.

December and January are cold and damp in Istanbul; the temperature usually stays above freezing but the wind lowers how it feels. Snow is not guaranteed every year, and the city slows when it falls. In exchange there are no queues at the museums, hotel prices are at their lowest of the year, and snow on Uludağ and Kartepe is certain in these months.

February and March are transitional: changeable weather, sun one day and rain the next. Late March brings the first tulips and the city greens. April and May are the two most balanced months of the year — ideal walking temperatures, tulip gardens open, crowds not yet begun.

June is hot but bearable; the swimming season opens in Antalya and Bodrum. July and August are the hottest and busiest stretch: days above forty degrees on the coast, a humid weight in Istanbul. In those months the Black Sea highlands are the sensible answer — an August morning in Trabzon is fifteen degrees.

September is summer continued with the crowds thinned: the sea is still warm, the air lets you move. October is the second-best month of the year. In November the rain increases and the days shorten; still good for a city trip, not for the coast.

The right way to pick a month is to look at the purpose, not the calendar. There are three different holidays here and the best time for each is different.

For the sea: late May to early October; the water is at its warmest from July to September. Antalya's sea stays warm longer than the Aegean. If you want a beach hotel, November to April will not do — some properties close.

For city sightseeing: April-May and September-October. Those four months give you weather you can walk in and short museum queues. Istanbul can be seen in July and August, but the middle of the day is hard going; the programme spreads to the early morning and late afternoon.

For snow: December to March, on Uludağ and Kartepe. Snow can fall in Istanbul but is not guaranteed, and when it does the city seizes up; if snow is the point, you have to go up the mountain.

To escape the summer heat: the Black Sea. Trabzon and the highlands in July and August are the route Gulf guests choose most — but the highland season opens at the end of June, and in May the roads are still misty and occasionally closed.

Three stretches stand clearly apart in the calendar, and knowing them delivers the biggest saving if your dates are flexible.

The first runs from mid-July to the end of August. Demand from abroad and from inside Türkiye peaks together; coastal hotels are full and air fares are at their highest of the year.

The second is the weeks of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Because they are public holidays in Türkiye, domestic travel explodes: hotels fill and the intercity roads clog. Gulf guests' holidays often fall in the same week, so the two demands stack.

The third is the week of New Year. Hotel prices in Istanbul rise briefly, then drop in January to their lowest of the year.

The week before or after any of these three gives you the same holiday noticeably cheaper and far more comfortably. Booking in those dates has to happen months ahead; in the last fortnight either nothing is left or the price is far above normal.
